What is the Internet of Things and How Does it Works?

Internet of Things

These days, technology is growing every day. And one of its examples is the Internet of things also known as IoT.

Internet of things refers to”the physical objects with sensors, processing ability, software and other technologies that connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the internet or other communication networks.”

In simple words, IOT connects computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals, etc. In order to switch on the A.C, now you don’t have to get from the couch and get the remote and switch it on.

All you need is your smartphone connected to the device. Isn’t it amazing?

In this article, we will be discussing IOT and its uses.

What is the Internet to Things

The Internet of things or IOT is a shared network of connected devices for which technology is being used to communicate between devices.

IoT

In short, devices such as computing devices, mechanical devices, etc. are connected to some technology to meet your needs or demands. All this happened because of a computer chip with high-frequency telecommunication. This means all the devices such as television, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, cars, even toothbrushes can use sensors for smart use.

From the above discussion, we can conclude that IOT is a technology mainly for devices which do not have an internet connection and can communicate with the network freely for humanly uses.

Types of IOT

There are various types of IOTs in which this technology can be used, some of these are mentioned below:

1. Commercial Internet of Things

Commercial internet of things or CIOT is used for personal and home surroundings. CIOT provides benefits to larger places such as supermarkets, hotels, healthcare facilities, office buildings etc.

CIOT can be used for managing access to corporate facilities, utilising consumption in hotels and other places and many more.

2. Industrial Internet of Things

The Industrial Internet of Things is IOTs in industrial territory. IIOT allows proficiency in their working. This includes industrial appliances such as robotics, medical devices, mission-critical applications like nuclear and energy management systems, thermostats, car lights etc.

3. Infrastructure Internet of Things

Infrastructure Internet of things generally deals with the evolution of smart frameworks to embody IOT technology to improve its working and maintenance.  For instance, bridges, railway tracks, on and offshore wind farms etc.

4. Consumer Internet of Things

Consumer Internet of things describes the use of this technology for consumer devices. For example, smartphones, smart home products, wearables like smartwatches etc. Generally, CIOT uses Wi Fi or Bluetooth to make connectivity possible. These technologies offer short – range communication and are only suitable for small places like home and office.

5. Internet of Military Things

Internet of Military things also known as the internet of battlefield things. As the name suggests, IOMT is a technology used in military surroundings or battlefield environments. This technology is commonly used in connecting ships, planes, tanks, drones, soldiers etc. Moreover, IOMT generates data that can be used to boost military practices, strategies etc

Uses of IOT

The Internet of things varies from industry to industry. How IOTs can be used in various industries are mentioned below:

1. Healthcare Industry:

IOTs benefit the healthcare industry the most. These days, wearables like smartwatches are in fashion. This keeps a record of your heart rate, pulse rate, steps taken in a day, tracking sleep, sitting postures etc. IOTs with nanotechnology can even track cancerous cells. IOT is changing the industry speedily.

2. Home Mechanisation:

Controlling home appliances with a remote is an age-old thing. Now everything is either voice-controlled or by your smartphone. IOTs are now part of our daily life. These days, everything in our houses is automated. For instance, Amazon Echo or Google Home. This technology made your home a smart home.

3. Hospitality:

While staying in a hotel, you don’t need to worry about losing your keys, about bills or any other thing. Thanks to IOTs, everything is automated. From electronic keys that are sent directly to your device to the automatic charge of the accounts. Everything is mechanical. This makes the work more efficient.

4. Smart Retail:

Retailers started using IOT techniques that improve store’s functioning. For example: increase purchases, reduce theft, intensify the consumer’s shopping experience etc.

5. Transportation:

IOTs merge both personal and commercial vehicles, which enhance communication and information. It also provides benefits such as weather tracking, automobiles monitoring, distance coverage etc.

6. Traffic Monitoring:

IOT techniques for traffic monitoring can be very useful. This technology gathers and inspect traffic data and provides information on traffic accidents or any other incident. For instance, if anybody fails to follow any traffic rule, then the receipt of their fine will go directly to their contact number.

7. Agriculture Industry:

Agriculture is a traditional industry. And still work on customary techniques which need man force. But with the changing time, the demands are increasing.

And to fulfil them, IOTs are introduced. IOTs are used for crop monitoring, precision farming, smart greenhouse management, livestock management etc. Drones are used to monitor air, soil, and moisture quality. And use of mechanical spray of fertilisers. This makes farmer’s work more easy and efficient.

Benefits of IOT

There are many benefits of the Internet of things, some of them are mentioned here:

  • Improved capacity of staff and decreased human labour
  • Better use of resources
  • Improve work safety
  • Improved customer experience
  • Reduced cost
  • Improved quality of life
  • Provide health and safety
  • Enhance security measure
  • Improves business

Conclusion

Technology never stops amazing us. It keeps on growing. One such invention is the Internet of Things. In this article, we try to cover many aspects of IOT. IOT keeps increasing with different industries and makes our life easier. However, these benefits come with some setbacks. For instance, it causes lots of time and money, as it is an expensive technology. Data breach, causes unemployment, weakens security and privacy etc. That is why we need to focus on its advantages and use it according to the needs.
